Reference Librarian

Primary Purpose of Position:
The Reference Librarian will work with other members of the reference staff to provide extensive reference and research assistance to faculty, students, staff, the local bar, and the public. General reference duties include serving as a liaison to assigned faculty, departments, and student organizations; conducting individual research consultations with faculty and students; staffing library service points during assigned hours; providing lectures on library and research related material; maintaining faculty and scholarly publications on the digital repository; training faculty research assistants; creating materials to assist with research, including research guides, instructional videos, and other research resources; developing and marketing library services to faculty and students; planning library events and programs; participating in collection development; supervising student workers; and liaising with vendors of legal databases and services. In addition, all NCCU reference librarians will teach the research portion of a section of Legal Research of Persuasion, with the potential to teach advanced research classes. The Reference Librarian also will contribute to law librarianship by participating in professional organizations, publishing, and presenting at regional and national conferences.

Minimum Education/Experience:
Juris Doctor Degree from an ABA approved law school OR an Master of Library Science from and ALA accredited institution. Generally this individual has 0-1 year of experience in the field.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Candidates must also have excellent communication skills, a demonstrated ability to work well in a fast-paced environment and a familiarity with and understanding of legal research materials in all formats. The successful candidate will be a self-starter, able to meet deadlines and work well in a collaborative environment to achieve common goals. S/he will be able to develop productive working relationships and work effectively as a team member as well as independently. Some teaching/training experience is required.
