Position Description

This is a full-time, tenure track Biological Sciences instructor position in the School of Mathematics and Science. Under the direction of the Dean, the assignment for the full- service week will be to teach any of the biological sciences courses offered by the department. The college is seeking an individual who is proficient and enthusiastic about teaching anatomy in the context of evolution, and to participate in any other professional responsibilities as identified under 18.2.3 of the faculty agreement. Although this position is initially at the Chino Campus, transfers to the Rancho or Fontana campuses may be possible per contract and need.

Responsibilities

SCOPE OF ASSIGNMENT
This assignment includes (but is not limited to) the following:
Instruct classes in biological sciences in accordance with the established course outlines of record and consistent with the department's standards. This includes organizing instruction towards achieving those objectives; participating in the selection of textbooks and other materials; instructing through active and collaborative learning strategies, discussion, demonstrations, and lecture; conferring with students as appropriate; assigning grades; and providing a safe and positive classroom environment conducive to effective learning.
Maintain professional and ethical standards.
Remain current in the subject matter areas, in techniques used to study the subject matter, and in the techniques of effective instruction.
Participate in department and college meetings and committee work, curriculum and program design and development, development and assessment of student learning outcomes, community outreach, development of complementary instructional activities for use in the success centers, department website development, student advisement, program review, and other duties necessary for the benefit of the students, the biology department, the college, the community, and the profession.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Master's degree in any biological science; OR
Bachelor's degree in any biological science AND Master's in biochemistry, biophysics, or marine science; OR
Possession of a valid Lifetime California Community College credential authorizing service as an instructor in biology; OR
The equivalent (equivalency questions are included in the Faculty Application for Employment); AND
Clear evidence of sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
Preference will be given to those candidates who establish the highest level of professional competency as evidenced by any or all of the following:
Expertise with the student populations included in the Chaffey College Equity Plan.
Recent experience teaching courses in non-traditional formats such as online, hybrid, fast-track, and accelerated.
Demonstrated excellence in teaching a wide variety of biology courses to biology majors and non-majors at the college level.
Demonstrated commitment to equity and inclusive instruction.
Demonstrated excellence at thoughtful, innovative curriculum design.
Demonstrated depth of knowledge and technical skills in a broad spectrum of modern biological subject matter.
Demonstrated expertise in anatomy and the ability to teach this topic in an evolutionary context.
A history of research activities or other professional activities that demonstrate ongoing active commitment to the scientific endeavor.
Demonstrated cooperative, organizational skill in managing laboratory classrooms. Evidence of effective contribution to collaborative team effort in an academic setting.
Computer proficiency.
Evidence of appreciation and respect for students and their role and responsibility in the learning process.
Evidence of effective oral and written communication skills.
Demonstrated commitment to active involvement in the full range of professional and leadership roles expected of a Community College Professor.
Demonstrated commitment to the philosophy and mission of the community college.

Additional Information

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
Based upon the minimum and/or desirable qualifications stated in this position announcement, the initial salary placement range is $65,700 (minimum qualifications) to $93,700 (doctorate) (Fall 2019 salary schedule). Placement is based on the regular full-time faculty salary schedule and is dependent upon verification of relevant experience and coursework from a regional or nationally accredited institution of higher learning.

The Selection Process
