JOB DESCRIPTION SUMMARY
The Director for Diversity and Inclusive Excellence will bring leadership, vision, integrity and a team-oriented philosophy to advance the diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI). The Director will guide and lead efforts to cultivate an environment that values and demonstrates the Institute's commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion. The position will be responsible for developing and executing a cohesive approach to aligning and integrating a range of new and existing initiatives, policies, systems, and procedures that will foster an inclusive campus climate that embraces diverse perspectives, complex identities and lived experiences to ensure that all can thrive.

Since the initial establishment of the Division of Talent and Inclusion several years ago, this new, redefined position reflects the evolution of the Institute's maturity in our diversity and inclusion work, with a renewed focus on striving for more impactful and measurable outcomes of our institutional efforts towards inclusive excellence. The next Director will have the breadth and depth of experiences and significant accomplishments to further advance DEI engagement across the campus by examining and enhancing of current practices, policies, procedures, programs, structures, and campus climate.

Reporting to the Vice-President for Talent and Inclusion and Chief Diversity Officer, the Director will partner across the institution to actualize a strategic vision that advances and sustains inclusive excellence across the institution, while prioritizing and championing organizational change. As a key leader within the Division of Talent and Inclusion, the successful candidate will establish and nurture collaborative partnerships with all institutional stakeholders: academic and administrative leadership, faculty, students, staff, alumni and extended WPI community.

The Director will work collaboratively with the Institute's Title IX Coordinator and will play a role in the Institute's compliance efforts and commitment to providing a learning and working environment free from gender discrimination and sexual harassment. This position will also collaborate with the Assistant Dean of Students to lead WPI's Bias Incidence Reporting and Response efforts.

JOB DESCRIPTION
Position Responsibilities:

Leadership and Inclusive Excellence
Identify and implement best practice approaches to ensure continued and long-term institutional excellence fueled by the institution's commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Collaborate with the Vice-President, Talent and Inclusion and Chief Diversity Officer to coordinate and align DEI efforts across WPI and ensure the achievement of institutional strategic goals.

Serve as the institutional liaison for Institute-wide programs and initiatives, including oversight and coordination of WPI's Project Inclusion Initiative.

Develop dynamic and intentional diversity, equity and inclusion programs and initiatives for faculty and staff. Partner with the Director of the Office of Multicultural Affairs to identify opportunities to support student related DEI efforts.

In partnership with institutional stakeholders, implement and lead the Bias Incident Response Program. Utilizing knowledge of federal, state, local, laws, rules, regulations, policies and procedures, facilitate appropriate resolution to reports of bias-related incidents. Identify and coordinate appropriate actions for any identified trends or patterns.

Co-chair and provide operational management for WPI's newly formed Institutional Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Leadership Committee.

Cultivate and promote an inclusive learning environment that encourages and supports community-wide programs such as the MLK Commemorative Address, workshops, multicultural events, and advocacy for affinity groups that support and promote campus learning that is diverse and inclusive.

Partner with the Office of the Provost to lead the Diversity Advocate Program and develop strategies and opportunities to recruit and retain diverse faculty.

Engage in efforts to ensure alignment with Institutional commitment and compliance efforts related to Title IX.

Research and Assessment
Serve as the research lead for DEI initiatives to improve the impact and efficacy of strategic initiatives, develop case studies and white papers related to internal DEI efforts. Collaborate with the Office of Institutional Research to conduct ongoing analysis of quantitative and qualitative data to identify trends, patterns and short and long-term impacts of Project Inclusion recommendations and implementation strategies.

Develop metrics and dashboards to ensure accountability, tracking, and monitoring of divisional and institutional efforts towards inclusive excellence. Work closely with appropriate offices to identify tools and instruments, including valid and reliable surveys, to compile reports that create benchmarks and assess institutional progress.

Institutional Visibility and Communications
Collaborate with the Division of Marketing Communications to develop materials to promote DEI goals and successes. Contribute to the design and creation of communications and public relations tools.

Serve as a liaison with external consultants, coordinate meetings with campus constituents and publicize DEI sponsored events and activities.

Identify opportunities to integrate DEI initiatives to strengthen partnerships in the local and regional community.

Manage the division's social media and technology platforms using official division and institutional communications and messaging.

Participate and engage in other duties as assigned to support institutional and divisional success.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY
Directly supervise the Diversity and Inclusion Specialist. The majority of outcomes will be accomplished through indirect leadership and collaboration across the division and the Institute. Incumbent must be effective at accomplishing goals through the work of others and coordinating efforts performed by multiple individuals and groups.

FISCAL RESPONSIBILITY
The Director will have direct responsibility and oversee allocation of funds designated to support strategic DEI initiatives.

QUALIFICATIONS
The successful candidate will be show evidence of leading meaningful organizational change, particularly as it relates to diversity, equity and inclusion. The candidate will have both a strong theoretical and working knowledge of diversity, equity and inclusion, with the ability to translate that knowledge to others, as well as possess the ability to put their experience and knowledge into practice.

Required Qualifications:

Master's degree from an accreditation program in higher education, leadership, business, social sciences, or related field.

7+ years' experience leading related initiatives and programs in an academic environment with a demonstrated understanding of the culture in higher education, including shared governance and respect for diverse views and opinions. Experience in working with diverse constituents. Bilingual skills are preferred.

5+ years' in a leadership role with proven success in developing and leading diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives and programs which demonstrate upward progression.

Experience leveraging talent management best practices to enable institutional diversity recruiting and retention efforts.

Demonstrated knowledge of federal, state, and local laws, regulations and guidelines related to Title IX and civil rights enforcement.

Ability to conceptualize and execute programs and initiatives with demonstrated abilities to set priorities, possess sound analytical skills and think systematically from both a detailed and strategic perspective.

Must possess a record of personal and professional integrity; understanding of change management; strong communication skills; and a commitment to cultural diversity.

  • Exercise independent judgment to integrate resources, policies, and information to develop procedures, solutions, and other outcomes.
  • Senior level verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent listening, collaboration and team-building skills

Work is performed under minimal supervision and performance is based on the effective operation of the administrative function. The performance evaluation is conducted through the performance evaluation system and in accordance with the Institute Policies & Procedures.
