Job Description Summary
The Beckman Center for Cryo EM facility at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania has an opening for a Cryo EM Facility Technical Director position to manage the cryo electron microscopy facility and ensure that the cryo EM facility is always at the forefront of the latest technical innovations in cryo electron microscopy and tomography.

The successful candidate will provide management & supervision for the EMRL Core's various projects. Primary responsibilities include work in all phases of Electron Microscopy (EM), cryo Electron Microscopy (cryoEM), correlative cryogenic fluorescence light microscopy (cryoFLM) together with cryogenic electron tomography (cryoET) and cryo-FIB-SEM coupled with cryoET from sample preparation to expert operation & maintenance of the electron microscope.

The position also includes some administrative duties including maintaining information for client billing. In addition, the successful candidate
must direct the work flow of lab members, must be able to teach Electron Microscopy techniques to others & be able to assist clients in
designing & interpreting experiments.

Job Responsibilities
  • Ensuring that Beckman Center for Cryo EM facility is always at the forefront of the latest technical innovations in cryo electron microscopy and cryo electron tomography. Supervising/mentoring 1-2 research project managers at varying levels.
  • Consulting with principal investigators regarding complex experiment design and advises on how to establish protocols for these experiments.
  • Supporting cryo-EM and cryo-ET sample preparation, imaging and providing training and instruction to users on using these imaging modalities.
  • Coordinating/Doing equipment repair and maintenance to ensure the best performance of all equipment at Beckman Center for Cryo EM and related infrastructure as well as providing general management including assigning project workflow.
  • Training/supervising research staff, postdoctoral researchers/fellows and students in the use of these new technologies.
  • Providing support on data analysis.
  • Managing billing and project records.
  • Supporting new methods adaptation and development.
  • Advertising core capabilities to various potential user groups to help bring in new clients.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned

  • Masters and 5 to 7 years required, Ph.D. preferred, with 1 to 3 years of experience in EM, cryoEM, cryoET and cryo-FIB-SEM or equivalent combination of education and experience.
