Job Description:
This position is for a founding director who will also serve as one of two founding faculty who will launch and support our department's new undergraduate work-based software engineering (SE) program.After completing two years of core studies either at Minnesota State University, Mankato or another institution, students compete for a position in our upper-division SE program. The upper division experience starts with a one-semester residential "Academy" that takes place in the Minneapolis/St. Paul metropolitan area, during which students are prepared for four semesters of work in industry including mastering skills for self-directed learning and finding a co-op placement. Students then move on to four semesters of working at a paid co-op position in industry combined with virtual/distance study with our faculty. The work-based SE curriculum combines technical software engineering training with the professional skills development necessary to succeed in a STEM.Responsibilities in this position include serving as the founding director of the new program, framing and providing guidance to the team that runs the residential "Academy" semester, coaching and supporting students' SE co-op work, teaching core and elective upper-division SE topics courses, and advising SE students. Course topics that SE faculty will teach include software engineering; project management; software quality, measurement and testing; software requirements; software architecture and design; leadership, metacognition, teamwork, written and oral communication, ethics, diversity, equity, inclusion, belonging, and professional and personal responsibility; software process, lifecycle, and sustainability. Courses are delivered both in person during the Academy and virtually during the four semesters of co-op.Candidates must have at least five years' professional experience working as a software engineer, or in a closely related job position. This minimum of demonstrated applied experience is required.The successful candidate will serve as the program leader, frame and guide the new SE program overall, mentor more junior faculty and other program team members, engage with industry partners to help create successful co-op experiences for SE students; participate in curriculum design, instruction, and evaluation; help create innovative strategies for student recruitment, retention, and completion; seek external funding; and eventually help lead the ABET accreditation process for the SE program.

This position will be based in the Minneapolis/St. Paul metropolitan area.

A typical faculty workload responsibility may include up to twenty four (24) credits of instruction per academic year.

The successful candidate may need to teach in other areas as assigned and qualified.

The successful candidate will collaborate with colleagues in curriculum design, instruction and evaluation, conduct research productively and mentor students in research, help create innovative strategies for student recruitment, retention, and completion, and develop external funding.

All faculty members are expected to engage in scholarly or creative activity or research, in continuing preparation and study, in contributing to student growth and development, and in providing service to the university and community (See Article 22 and Appendix G of the IFO Master Agreement).

This position will advise undergraduate majors.

Required Qualifications:

A minimum of eighteen credits of graduate study in software engineering, computer science, information technology, management information science, or a closely related computing field, completed and documented on an official transcript at the date of appointment.

A minimum of five years professional experience working in software engineering or a closely related field.

Demonstrated ability to serve a diverse population and apply an equity lens to this position including social justice and/or anti-racism.

Demonstrated commitment to fostering a diverse working and learning environment.

Masters or PhD degree in software engineering, computer science, information technology, management information science, or a closely related computing field.

Demonstrated experience in starting and successfully growing new projects, organizations, or businesses.

Demonstrated understanding of and ability to support development of industry partner relationships, particularly in garnering and supporting the software engineering co-ops that form the basis of the software engineering program.

Demonstrated ability to teach the following courses, along with additional courses depending on the departments needs. Upper division undergraduate courses in software engineering; software quality, measurement and testing; software requirements; software architecture and design; and/or software process, lifecycle, and sustainability.

Demonstrated understanding of, ability to support, and/or experience with using project-based and/or work-based learning pedagogical methods in a computing field, including teaching, advising, and/or mentoring students in such programs.

Demonstrated/documented experience teaching and fostering learning success among diverse student populations including first-generation students, second-language learners, international students, and other student populations that are under-represented in the STEM fields.

Demonstrated effective written, oral communication, and presentation skills, particularly in working with students, staff, and faculty.

The Department of Computer Information Science is comprised of 15 full-time faculty members actively engaged in teaching, research, and service. The department offers undergraduate majors in Computer Science, Computer Information Technology, Management Information Systems, Computer Application Development, and Health Informatics; masters degrees in Information Technology, Data Science, Information Security & Risk Management, and Health Informatics and Analytics; and minors and certificates for students with varying interests and backgrounds.
