The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based upon a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, education, experience, specialty and training. Position Summary:
The Department of Human Services and Counseling is seeking an Academic Advisor & Retention Specialist (AARS). This position will be responsible for helping students with majors, minors, or certificates in Human Services and FERA to select appropriate courses, develop educational goals, and define a career path through use of developmental advising techniques. The AARS will monitor student progress, making targeted outreach to students to address potential obstacles to graduation, as well as focus on retention and recruitment efforts.

Duties/Responsibilities:
The Academic Advisor and Retention Specialist helps plan and deliver University-wide and unit-specific advising programs and initiatives, such as New Student Orientation advising, support for general education and department-specific requirements, and support for the Universitys Hispanic-Serving Institution initiative.

Advising Services (40%)
Conduct individual and group advising sessions with students
Assist with course selection, scheduling, registration, and miscellaneous student inquiries
Help students with long-term degree planning
Help students begin or continue career planning process
Refer students to appropriate University resources
Monitor progress of and document interactions with assigned students
Identify students who are not reaching milestones/meeting requirements and implement appropriate interventions
Coordinate information dissemination to students within the department
Participate in University-wide outreach campaigns

Recruitment and Retention Services (25%)
Table events and outreach new students (Open Houses, Career Days, conferences, etc.)
Coordinate departmental events designed for student retention (Fall orientation/Bridging Bash, Graduation/Alumni Event, etc.)

Administrator (25%)
Upkeep of social media presence
Assist in monitoring incoming phone calls and emails
Other duties as assigned

Masters Program (10%)
Outreach of prospective and enrolled students
Assist with applicant and program inquiries


Required Qualifications:
Bachelors degree in Human Services and Counseling or related field
Demonstrated experience with developmental advising techniques (or equivalent experience) at an accredited institution
Experience working with diverse, urban populations, including but not limited to people of color, veterans, or other underrepresented groups
Demonstrated excellent written and oral communication skills

Preferred Qualifications:
Experience with academic advising software/Student Information System (such as Banner, Student Success Collaborative/SSC Navigate)
Bilingual Spanish/English speaker
Demonstrated experience in program assessment
Masters degree in a Human Services and Counseling related field
Demonstrated experience using social media technology
Experience working across units/departments at the University level
Experience creating and implementing events, trainings, or workshops
Experience as an administrative or office assistant that includes customer service experience that involved direct contact with the public and internal staff
Experience working with and preserving confidential documents/information
