Position: Assistant Professor of Translation Studies
Effective Date: August 17, 2027 (Fall 2027 Semester)
Salary Range: The Assistant Professor (Academic Year) classification salary is $74,652 to $158,688/year; $6,221 to $13,224/per month (12 monthly payments per academic year). The anticipated hiring range is $86,000 to $90,000 per year; $7,167 to $7,500/per month (12 monthly payments per academic year). The salary offered is commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Required Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in Translation Studies, Applied Linguistics, Comparative Literature, or a closely related field. Degree at time of application or official notification of completion of the doctoral degree by August 1, 2027.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in English and at least two of the following Romance languages: French, Italian, and Spanish, with the ability to teach translation between English and those languages
  • Formal training and professional experience in translation
  • Background or formal training in interpreting
  • Experience teaching translation theory and practice at the university level
  • Demonstrated expertise in computer-assisted translation (CAT) tools, machine translation, and post-editing workflows
  • Evidence of scholarly publication and an active research agenda in Translation Studies or a related field
  • Demonstrated commitment to working successfully with a diverse student population, including low socioeconomic and first-generation students


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience training professional translators in academic or industry settings
  • Experience supervising graduate research, including MA theses
  • Experience in academic program or curriculum development
  • Experience adapting curricula to emerging technologies, professional standards, and global market changes
  • Record of international collaboration and established professional networks within the translation and interpreting community
  • Experience successfully working with populations demographically and/or socioeconomically similar to the CSULB student body
  • Experience mentoring or supporting students using inclusive and culturally relevant teaching strategies in a diverse classroom


Duties:

  • Teach undergraduate and graduate courses in Translation Studies, including translation theory and methodology; literary translation in English-French, English-Italian, and English-Spanish language pairs; specialized and professional translation; CAT tools; machine translation and post-editing; and translator training and professional practice. (Mode of instruction may include in-person, hybrid, online, and/or any combination thereof.)
  • Integrate interpreting studies into translation curricula where appropriate and collaborate with faculty in interpreting in the MA in Translation and Interpreting
  • Design and update courses to reflect emerging technologies, evolving markets, current industry standards, and innovative technology-enhanced pedagogies
  • Mentor students and supervise MA theses in Translation Studies and related areas
  • Maintain an active research and scholarly agenda in Translation Studies or a related field, including applied research where appropriate
  • Maintain professional engagement as a translator and/or interpreter and develop partnerships with professionals, agencies, associations, and universities
  • Facilitate internships, professional placements, industry collaborations, and other career-connected opportunities for students
  • Participate in department, college, and university service, including program review, strategic planning, outreach, and continuing professional education

About the Department:
The Department of Romance, German, Russian Languages and Literatures is expanding graduate education in Translation and Interpreting following the launch of a graduate certificate in 2023 and the planned opening of the MA in Translation and Interpreting in Fall 2027. The program emphasizes multilingual and culturally inclusive education, the integration of theory and professional practice, translation technology, and career preparation. The successful candidate will contribute to the development of the new MA, collaborate with faculty in interpreting, support professional and academic partnerships, and help prepare multilingual students for evolving careers in translation, interpreting, and global communication.
