About Department:

The Department of Biological Sciences and its faculty provide insight into how life and physical sciences intersect and prepares students to pursue advanced degrees or a career in a variety of scientific fields. Students receive top notch, interdisciplinary academics and the opportunity to participate in hands-on research in a variety of subjects including cancer, immunity and aging, neuroscience, and infectious diseases, among many others. The department is located in the 68,000 square foot Dedman Life Sciences Building, which contains state-of-the-art laboratories, research facilities, lecture halls, and conference rooms.

About the Position:

The Research Assistant will contribute technically and conceptually to the Hibshman lab's research goals. The RA will be expected to conduct molecular, genetic, and biochemical experiments to screen for and optimize stress protectants. This will impact the long-term goals and operations of the department by fostering a productive, collaborative and interactive research environment.

Essential Functions:

  • Conduct experiments, document results and methods, and analyze data to contribute to ongoing research projects in the lab.

  • Provide general laboratory support including preparing and maintaining common stocks of buffers for experimental assays, cleaning and sterilizing laboratory glassware, maintaining and updating laboratory databases, and promoting organization around the lab.

  • Meet with supervisor.

  • Attend lab meetings, and other staff and departmental meetings and seminars.



Qualifications

Education and Experience:

A Bachelor's degree is required, preferably in the field of Molecular Biology or Biochemistry. A Master's is preferred.

A minimum of 1 year of experience in a biological research laboratory is required.

Prior experience with techniques in molecular biology (ex PCR, gel electrophoresis, molecular cloning, etc.), bacterial culture, biochemical techniques as well as experience with data visualization and statistics in R is preferred.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Candidate must demonstrate strong interpersonal and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate broadly across the University and develop and maintain effective relationships with a wide range of constituencies. Must also demonstrate strong written communication skills.

Candidate must possess strong problem-solving skills with the ability to identify and analyze problems, as well as devise solutions. Must also have strong organizational, planning and time management skills.

A strong working knowledge in Excel, Word, and Google docs is required.

  • Sit for long periods of time
  • Squat, stand, reach above shoulders
  • handle objects (dexterity)
  • Carry 25 lbs.
