Job Summary

Research Technician II | Job Code S56442 | Grade S14

The Scott Hale Lab in the Department of Pathology seeks a research technician to perform technical procedures in an immunology research laboratory under minimal supervision by applying standard scientific techniques and analytical principles.

The employee will record observations and measurements, and report results. May be responsible for cleaning, disinfecting, and maintaining cleanrooms and equipment. May assist with receipt and inspection of raw materials, and ordering and stocking of materials and equipment.

Responsibilities
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  1. Confers with senior laboratory personnel regarding the procedures and techniques to be followed in conducting research.
  2. Performs laboratory tests and conducts experiments and procedures either independently or in a team setting with other researchers in the laboratory.
  3. Makes statistical calculations, analyzes data and prepares reports summarizing results.
  4. Must be willing to work with research mice, will perform duties to manage research mouse colony, and collect animal tissues and specimens for laboratory analysis.
  5. Performs laboratory duties to clean and maintain equipment and ensures a safe work environment by monitoring and practicing safe laboratory procedures.
  6. Monitors and assists with purchasing of laboratory supplies and materials

Work Environment and Level of Frequency that may be required:
Nearly Continuously: Laboratory environment.
Often: Exposure to animals. Infectious disease, oils (there is air or skin exposure to oils or other cutting fluids), hazards (includes a variety of physical conditions, such as proximity to moving mechanical parts, moving vehicles, electrical current, working on scaffolding and high places, or exposure to chemicals).

Physical Requirements and Level of Frequency that may be required
Nearly Continuously: Hearing, listening, talking.
Often: Repetitive hand motion (such as typing and pipetting), walking, standing, sitting.
Seldom: Bending, reaching overhead.


Minimum Qualifications
EQUIVALENCY STATEMENT: 1 year of higher education can be substituted for 1 year of directly related work experience (Example: bachelor's degree = 4 years of directly related work experience).
Department may hire employee at one of the following job levels:
Research Technician, II: Requires at least 1 year of related experience.

Preferences
PREFERENCES
  • The candidate should be able to learn and apply laboratory techniques and skills, and will perform experiments under the supervision and training of senior lab personnel.
  • Experience and/or understanding of flow cytometry, RNA and DNA isolation/preparation, sequencing, PCR, and other cellular and molecular biology techniques is strongly preferred.
  • The candidate should be able to generate accurate and detailed research reports and laboratory records. Strong computer skills and the ability to learn and operate laboratory equipment is important to success in this position.
  • Excellent communication skills, the ability to work with others, and a strong work ethic/enthusiasm for conducting research is highly preferred.
