The CARB-X Information Technology (IT) Director provides strategic leadership for CARB-X's enterprise technology, data, and cybersecurity functions, ensuring the organization's systems, digital tools, and information infrastructure effectively support its global mission. This senior leader is responsible for developing and executing CARB-X's IT strategy; overseeing cybersecurity risk management and compliance with US and international data protection standards; and guiding the design, integration, and optimization of core systems such as Salesforce, Box, Asana, and analytics platforms. The role directs data governance, reporting, business intelligence, and organizational analytics, ensuring high-quality, actionable information for internal decision-making and external funder reporting. The IT Director works closely with the CARB-X COO to ensure that technology, data, and cybersecurity strategies are fully integrated into operational planning and support CARB-X's mission, risk posture, and organizational efficiency. The IT Director oversees a multidisciplinary, remote team across time zones, including Business Intelligence Architects and software application professionals, and fosters strong cross-team collaboration, user support, and technology enablement across CARB-X. The leader in this role also serves as CARB-X's primary liaison to Boston University IS&T and external vendors, promotes secure and effective technology use, and shapes organizational policies for the responsible adoption of emerging technologies, including AI. This position requires deep technical expertise, strong strategic judgment, and the ability to advance complex technology initiatives in a global, fast-paced, research-focused environment. Essential Functions include:

Technology Strategy, Architecture and Governance
  • Develop and lead CARB-X's enterprise technology strategy, ensuring systems, data infrastructure, and digital tools effectively support organizational priorities and global operations.
  • Advise the COO on technology investments, risks, and opportunities, ensuring alignment with operational and strategic priorities.
  • Oversee the work of Business Intelligence Architects to design and optimize scalable data architectures, systems integrations, and analytical environments. Establish technology governance frameworks, set strategic priorities, and ensure organizational readiness for emerging technologies, including defining CARB-X's approach to the safe and responsible use of AI.
  • Partner with executive leadership to align technology roadmaps with long-term programmatic, operational, and portfolio needs.


Cybersecurity Oversight and Risk Management
  • Lead CARB-X's cybersecurity program in partnership with Boston University's Information Services & Technology department.
  • Conduct quarterly security reviews and risk assessments, ensuring compliance with US government and international data protection requirements (e.g. GDPR). Maintain and execute the Information Security SOP, coordinate cybersecurity controls across systems and vendors, and oversee vulnerability management, incident response, and remediation. Serve as the primary cybersecurity advisor to the COO, providing analysis to support risk-based decision-making and resource allocation.


Systems Administration, SDLC Oversight, and Application Management
  • Provide leadership for CARB-X's enterprise applications, especially Salesforce and Box and ensure they are secure, well-governed and commitment from leadership is secured to support change management and effective use across the organization.
  • Directly participate in systems planning, requirements definition, configuration decisions, integrations, testing, and release management through a structured SDLC, while supervising the Software Application Manager and Business Intelligence Analysts.
  • Ensure systems are scalable, resilient, user-centered, and compliant with security and data governance standards.
  • Coordinate with the COO to ensure system enhancements support organizational workflows, accountability structures, and reporting needs.
  • Coordinate with BU IS&T on infrastructure dependencies and technology alignment.

Data Governance, Analytics, and Reporting Excellence
  • Lead organizational data governance and analytics strategy, including oversight of BI Architects.
  • Ensure the accuracy, reliability, and usability of CARB-X data assets.
  • Develop analytical frameworks, dashboards, and reporting tools that support strategic decision-making, operational monitoring, funder reporting, and organizational learning.
  • Establish standards for data collection, validation, access, and lifecycle management, and ensure alignment of data structures across CARB-X systems and teams.
  • Collaborate with the Project Management Director to build automated dashboards from defined data sources, delivering platform enhancements as needed to meet CARB-X Monitoring,
  • Evaluation and Learning reporting requirements.


User Support, Training and Technology Enablement
  • Oversee user support operations, including CARB-X IT inbox and Slack monitoring, user assistance workflows, and troubleshooting.
  • Manage user provisioning and deprovisioning across all systems. Lead robust technology onboarding and training for staff, including system tutorials, process documentation, how-to guides, and periodic "Tech Talks" for internal and external stakeholders.
  • Promote secure and effective use of CARB-X technology and identify opportunities to improve staff digital workflows and productivity.


Team Leadership, Vendor Management, and Cross-functional Collaboration
  • Lead and mentor the IT team, including BI Architects, the Software Application Manager, and Salesforce Administrator & Business Analyst.
  • Provide clear direction, performance feedback, and opportunities for professional development.
  • Partner with the COO to define long-term staffing, vendor strategy, and resourcing for CARB-X's technology and data capabilities.
  • Manage relationships with external technology vendors, contractors and BU IS&T.
  • Foster strong collaboration across Operations, Finance & Research Administration, Research & Development, External Affairs and Executive teams to ensure technology supports cross-team projects, audits, and organizational priorities.

Required Skills

Required: Bachelor's or Master's degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, Information Systems, Data Science, Cybersecurity, Engineering, or a related field. Preferred: Advanced degree (MS, MBA, MPH with tech focus, or similar) and/or relevant professional certifications such as CISSP, CISM, CISA, CEH, CCSP, PMP, Salesforce certifications, or data engineering/analytics certifications.
  • 10+ years of progressively responsible experience in IT leadership, technology management, systems architecture, data management, cybersecurity, or enterprise applications, preferably within research, biotech, government-funded programs, or complex global organizations.
  • 5+ years of management experience, including supervision of technical teams (e.g. BI/data architects, application administrators, analysts, engineers).
  • Demonstrated experience developing and executing organizational IT strategies, technology roadmaps, or digital transformation initiatives.
  • Proven experience overseeing enterprise systems such as CRM, project management tools, cloud storage systems, or analytics platforms (e.g. Salesforce, Asana, Box, Power BI/Tableau).
  • Significant experience with cybersecurity frameworks, incident response, risk assessments, and ensuring compliance with federal and international data protection requirements (e.g. NIST, FISMA, GDPR).
  • Experience implementing and managing data governance, data quality frameworks, analytics environments, dashboards, and reporting pipelines.
  • Experience overseeing or executing a formal software development lifecycle (SDLC) for system enhancements or new application deployments.
Strong technical judgment and able to evaluate complex technology risks, propose pragmatic solutions, and prioritize competing demands. Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to communicate complex technical issues to non-technical audiences and executive leadership. Proven ability to lead and develop high-performing teams with diverse technical backgrounds. Demonstrated ability to collaborate across teams. Commitment to secure, ethical and responsible use of technology, including emerging tools such as AI. High professional integrity, strong judgment, and commitment to organizational mission, values, and responsible innovation. Experience working in environments with federal research funders, universities, or global stakeholders strongly preferred. Experience developing technology training, user support systems, and change-management processes. Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, distributed, global environment with multiple stakeholders and time zones. Ability to travel domestically and internationally as needed. The position can be entirely virtual, but must be able to work (at least partially) in ET and CET time zones.
