Job Summary
The Recreation Services team at the University of Colorado, Boulder is seeking applications for a Structural Trades I - Facility and Fitness Equipment Specialist! This position assists with maintaining and repairing fitness/weight equipment, along with supporting facility, pool and ice rink maintenance and repairs. Tasks assigned will require knowledge of trades work to complete the job in an efficient, cost effective and safe manner while providing excellent customer service.

Recreation Services oversees the LEED Platinum main campus Student Rec Center, a building with over 300,000 square feet of recreation and fitness activity space, as well as a satellite recreation center at Williams Village, outdoor basketball courts, a challenge ropes course, and eight turf and grass fields around campus. Throughout these facilities, members of the CU community can engage with a variety of programs that include ice skating, indoor rock climbing, intramural and club sports, yoga, aquatics and so much more.
What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be
Fitness/Weight Equipment Technician
- Perform the full repair cycle of locating and troubleshooting, disassembly, repair, testing, reassembly, cleaning and adjustment of fitness and weight equipment.
- Repair or replace treadmill decks, chains, sprockets, bearings, pulleys, springs and cables on various machines.
- Perform fully preventive and mechanical maintenance as required and scheduled, including preventative maintenance equipment inspections, parts usage and warranty repairs.
- Responsible for keeping free weight and resistance machine area in a clean, orderly, properly aligned and well condition as required by ADA and safety protocols.
- Perform mechanical schedule and calibration maintenance of fitness center equipment.
- Assist in the supervision of student staff, hiring, scheduling, training and evaluating staff.
Facility Maintenance
- Perform skilled and routine facility maintenance and repairs of building equipment, including aspects of electrical, plumbing, carpentry, and general labor duties.
- Perform simple maintenance and repairs of floors and walls including, patching, painting, replacing, and protecting as needed.
- Troubleshoots, cleans, tests and performs other preventative maintenance tasks in the facility.
Outdoor Facility Work
- Perform routine maintenance/ repairs of the outdoor recreation facilities
- Lining sports fields, moving goals, groom turf fields, and assist with ropes course
Pool Maintenance
- Perform routine maintenance and inspections on 3 pools.
- Checks pools for correct chemical balance, adds chlorine and muriatic acid, backwashes filters, performs repairs to chlorinator and circulation pump, changes filters, calibrates controller and fixes any error and alarms.
Ice Rink Maintenance
- Perform routine ice rink duties include monitoring building automation system that controls rink refrigeration, edge the ice, ice making using the Zamboni.
- Perform routine maintenance and repairs on the Zamboni and keep a detailed log of maintenance activities.
Special Events/Projects
- Collaborate and support to other areas within Student Life Affairs with planning, implementing, set up, tear down for special events and project.
Recreation Program and Facilities Quality Control
- This position contributes to the development of ideas and suggestions for program and facility improvement.
- Periodically attend Recreation Services classes or programs and use various assessment tools to ensure they are meeting or exceeding the standards and mission of the department.
- Report any problems or suggestions to the appropriate manager for attention.
What You Should Know
- This position operates University vehicles and requires a Driver's License in good standing.
- The anticipated hours for this position are Sunday - Thursday, from 7:00am - 3:30pm.
- Must be flexible if hours are adjusted, based on facility need.

The annual salary for this position is $50,000.

What We Require
- Two (2) years of semi-skilled or skilled labor experience in the field of building or facility maintenance.
- This includes knowledge of carpentry, plumbing, painting, pool maintenance and related tools and equipment.
- Appropriate education or successful completion of a formalized apprenticeship program will substitute the required experience on a year-for-year basis.
What You Will Need
- Ability to safely and effectively use a variety of tools.
- Knowledge of University policies and procedures.
- Strenuous movement of heavy objects and fitness equipment like treadmills, elliptical bikes, weight benches and free weights. This includes stooping, bending, pushing and lifting up to 75 lbs.
