Guided by enthusiasm for the medical care and health education mission of the SSU Student Health Center and working under the supervision of the Interim Director of the Student Health Center, the Radiologic Technologist has responsibility for: taking and developing plain diagnostic x-rays; ensuring the quality, safety, and organization of SHC x-ray operations including compliance with standards and regulations; using, maintaining, and helping select x-ray equipment and supplies; and interfacing with patients, clinicians, and vendors, as well as for performing medical office assistant, lab, and other support duties when not busy in x-ray.

Major duties of the position include, but are not limited to, the following:
In performing all job related responsibilities, the SHC Radiologic Technologist:
- Applies high ethical and medical quality standards;
- Demonstrates kindness, courtesy, collaboration, professionalism, and sound judgment;
- Acts in accordance with legal and regulatory requirements, SHC policies and procedures, and physician consultation (including SHC MDs and/or the consulting radiologist);
- Demonstrates objectivity, reliability, productivity, a positive perspective, and strong work ethic.

Technological:
- Skillfully operate x-ray equipment in order to take, develop, and process basic plain diagnostic X-ray images with high quality results;
- Instruct, prepare and position patients appropriately for radiographic examinations following standard procedures for patient care and safety;
- Calculate and select appropriate equipment settings for the safe and correct x-ray dose consistent with the objectives of the x-ray examination that has been ordered as well as patient safety;
- Determine x-ray views, image size, and angles at which x-rays should be taken and assure appropriate collimation of the x-ray beam;
- Determine when a patient should not be exposed to radiation, appropriately shield patients from radiation exposure, and observe other safety precautions in accordance with standard guidelines;
- Is responsible for the overall quality of x-ray images in the physical absence of a consulting radiologist, who is available by phone;
- Evaluate radiographs for diagnostic quality and determine when additional images or retakes are necessary and safe for the patient. Demonstrate the knowledge and skill to keep retakes to a minimum (2.5% or less);
- Appropriately handles and transfer X-ray images to digital format using CR equipment;
- Make technically accurate copies of images using CR equipment;
- Skillfully uses all X-ray image making, CR processing, and related equipment and software and perform minor maintenance and cleaning of equipment and the x-ray work area;
- Maintain back-up copies of x-ray images on CR machine;
- Adapt to future X-ray equipment and technology enhancements including digitally compatible equipment, computers, and electronic transmission of images;
- Coordinate x-ray technological and image management functions with future electronic health record systems.

X-ray Safety and QA:
- Maintain and apply knowledge of x-ray related regulations, procedures, and safety precautions;
- Watch for possible patient contraindications to radiation exposure and reports these to the ordering clinician prior to taking X-rays;
- Ensure all safety precautions including patient shielding are followed and use employee personal protective equipment and X-ray film badge as required;
- Organize and maintain proper monitoring of radiation control including film badge monitoring, hazardous waste disposal, safety standards as required by California Public Health Deportment Radiologic Health Branch, SSU Environmental Health and Safety, the consulting radiologist, SHC policies and procedures, national accreditation and other applicable guidelines;
- Report all hazardous or potentially hazardous circumstances to the Student Health Center Director or medical designee and work within guidelines to correct the situation;
- Maintain and submit results of monitoring of retakes, incident reports, positive vs negative films and other utilization review and QI activities;
- Is knowledgeable in basic first aid and is able to appropriately respond to emergent/urgent circumstances in the SHC and x-ray area;
- Maintains CPR certification at the healthcare provider with AED level;
- Is an active participant in and contributor to SHC Quality Improvement and external accreditation activities and suggest monitoring and QI studies to the SSU Quality Improvement committee.

X-ray Organization and Co-ordination:
- Plan and organize the work of the x-ray area including coordinating with other SHC functional areas, off-campus radiologist consultants, servicing and repair providers and other vendors;
- Ensure compliance with applicable codes, regulations, quality assurance, accreditation and licensing requirements;
- Work with SHC Director to evaluate service contracts, equipment, supplies, and specifications and secure cost effective purchase, maintenance, repair, and image interpretation as required;
- Work with SSU Environmental Health and Safety any potentially hazardous materials;
- Ensure required or otherwise indicated periodic maintenance, inspection, or testing of all SHC radiologic equipment, and reports equipment in need of professional maintenance to the SHC Director;
- Enhance SHC productivity and cost effectiveness;
- Perform the computer and recordkeeping work of the x-ray area for operational, regulatory, and accreditation purposes including taking and labeling images; maintaining confidential digital x-ray image files, film image files, radiologist reports, inspection reports, utilization and other data, logs of images taken, re-takes and other information using a computer and/or manual methods;
- Monitor x-ray supply inventories and research and make suggestions for cost effective purchases;
- Make DVD image copies to be sent to off-campus physicians, keep a record of this and ensure Front Office knows to collect charges for this and for any augmented service x-rays from the patient;
- Help plan and implement x-ray related policies and procedures;
- Gather information and make recommendations regarding x-ray related equipment, supplies and service contracts including specifications, usage, and cost effectiveness.
- Meet periodically with the SHC Director to report on pending issues and job progress and to suggest operational solutions and plans.

Because volume of x-ray work is variable and sometimes low, the Radiologic Technologist (with appropriate training and supervision) participates in and contributes to the full operation of the Student Health Center including but not limited to clinical support, quality improvement, risk management, accreditation, emergency preparedness, health promotion and office support activities as well as providing direct support to other functional areas of the SHC when not immediately busy with X-ray duties. These areas include, but are not limited to:

Clinical care area:
Greet and call patients to exam rooms, record chief complaint and vital signs in medical record, prepare exam room, medical supplies, and patient for exam, assist the provider and patient, act as a chaperone, explain procedures and provide information to patients, perform crutch training, DME fitting, hot pack treatments, TB screening and testing as overseen by RN, NP, or MD, perform EKGs, use other clinical area equipment, and perform similar clinical support duties as requested by the coordinating RN and clinical providers. Make appropriate clinical assistant entries in paper charts and electronic health records. Assist with annual clinical supply GAP inventory, and monitoring, make suggestions for ordering of orthopedic and other clinical supplies. Learn to give basic injections under the supervision of an RN, NP, or MD as indicated.

Clinical laboratory:
Under the general guidance of a licensed clinical laboratory scientist or physician, perform support work not requiring a clinical lab scientist license, such as preparing specimens, plating cultures, CUA waived testing, recordkeeping, and computer work.

Front Office and Administrative Support:
Perform medical reception and medical records duties including but not limited to paper and electronic patient scheduling, signing in patients, receiving phone calls, responding to general operational queries from patients, contacting patients for call backs, referral follow up and continuity of care, handling paper and electronic medical records and reviewing them for completion, data entry, immunization requirement compliance, and provide assistance to support the activities of the SHC Health Education Nurse.

Performs other secondary duties as assigned.

Busy out-patient medical clinic on a university campus working with radiation producing equipment, chemical reagents, infectious agents, and regular interactions with ill and injured patients. Standards of confidentiality, discretion, professionalism, universal precautions, radiation safety and other safety and risk management practices must be followed. Some work areas are confined-others require walking some distance. Some workspace is shared and subject to frequent interruptions. Work includes periods of extended standing or sitting, the need to move quickly in urgent circumstances and physically move patients, supplies, equipment, etc. Attire and grooming must be appropriate to an out-patient medical setting with public contact. Name tags, lab coat, gloves and other personal protective equipment must be utilized. As a non-exempt employee, any request for overtime will be specified and pre-approved by Appropriate Administrator. There is no night or weekend work, but the radiologic tech should be prepared to be present when scheduled during SHC operating hours, including the extended hours clinic, and complete work that is immediately essential to patient care before departing for lunch or at the end of the day, with future adjustments in schedule or compensating time off, or additional hourly compensation accounting for extra time worked. Reliability and punctuality are essential.

Qualifications
This position requires the following:
1. Completion of an appropriate Radiologic Technologist training program.
2. Possession of a current valid license as a certified radiologic technologist issued by the State of California Department of Health Services.
3. The knowledge, skills, and progressively responsible experience as a certified radiological technologist, sufficient to competently and accurately perform the described duties of this position.
4. Knowledge of modern X-ray equipment, techniques, and procedures; human anatomy, hazards of radiologic materials and the safety precautions.
5. Knowledge of and ability to apply general medical principles and practices such as universal precautions, aseptic technique, first aid, and CPR at the healthcare provider w/ AED level.
6. Knowledge and skills relevant to data management for both manual and automated/computerized information systems used in radiologic and health care settings.
7. Strong computer skills including familiarity with and ability to use standard office and specialized medical software as well as CR equipment, image storage, and transfer of images to consultant radiologists using gateway software.
8. The ability to:

  • Stand, walk, stoop, periodically lift up to 20 pounds, physically assist and position patients, perform gross and fine motor activities, move quickly through confined and expansive areas, hear and speak clearly, and respond effectively in a medical or environmental emergency;
  • Visual acuity sufficient to operate x-ray equipment and evaluate image quality, draw up medications, give injections and perform CUA waived lab tests.

    Must have the ability to effectively communicate with all levels within the university and establish and maintain productive and effective, inclusive working relationships amongst diverse populations including staff, faculty, administration, students, and other internal and external constituents. Must be able to accept constructive feedback and work cooperatively in group situations.
