ASSISTANT PROFESSOR OF MUSIC
10-MONTH, TENURE TRACK POSITION

This position may include a combination of day, evening, weekend, or extension site assignments.


RESPONSIBILITIES: Under the direction of the Dean of Arts, Communication and Social Sciences and as a member of the Music Department, primary teaching responsibilities will include but are not limited to: Music Theory and Aural Skills. Assignments may include a wide range of lecture/performance courses. Additional desirable qualifications include strong keyboard performance and keyboard pedagogy skills. The successful candidate will have a broad range of musical experiences in performance and Music Appreciation.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Master's Degree in Music OR Bachelor's Degree Music AND Master's Degree in Humanities, OR the equivalent, OR a valid California Community College Instructor Credential in Music.

Candidates must exhibit an appreciation of, a sensitivity to, and respect for a rich and diverse academic environment, inclusive of students, faculty, and staff of varying social, economic, cultural, ideological and ethnic backgrounds, and those with disabilities. Experience working in a community with a similar diversity pattern as is found in the service area for Southwestern College is desirable.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS: Ph.D. in Music Theory preferred. Knowledge or expertise in piano performance/pedagogy desirable. Recent teaching experience, especially at the community college level and with a broad mix of students of varying abilities; experience in teaching basic music courses using non-traditional approaches; professional performance experience; familiarity with computer–assisted technology as related to music education; evidence of a strong commitment to remain current in the field and instructional programs; demonstration of a commitment to become involved in the campus community and perform outreach to the surrounding community.

SALARY & BENEFITS:
Upon initial employment, full-time faculty members are placed on the salary schedule based upon years of experience and education. The maximum initial placement for experience is Step 6. Faculty members are encouraged to continue their professional development through additional study qualifying them for advancement on the salary schedule.
