Position Title : Coordinator of Advising

Department : Academic, Career and Transfer Advising

Reports To : Associate Dean for Academic, Career and Transfer Advising

The Coordinator of Advising is part of a leadership team that is responsible for the development and implementation of timely and diverse advising services and programming. Responsibilities include providing student orientation, mentoring, advising and other services to enhance students success from entry to completion of their academic program. By emphasizing high quality and innovative delivery and through thoughtful collaboration with faculty, students and staff, the Coordinator of Advising will support MCCs goal of providing clear academic and career pathways that promote student learning and achievement.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:*

Provide leadership for the advising area by assisting in the creation and maintenance of an overall vision and direction for services and programming which includes identifying and prioritizing resource needs; scheduling personnel; planning and assessment of events and programming and documenting area accomplishments.

Collaborate with the academic and co-curricular areas to build stronger connections between academic content areas, student engagement initiatives, advising and career planning to promote student success.

Under the direction of the Associate Dean of Academic, Career, and Transfer Counseling provide leadership to support academic advising services on the Bedford and Lowell Campuses to ensure that the services provided meet the needs of day, evening, weekend and online students with diverse socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds, including those with different levels of academic preparation and varying physical and learning abilities.

Provide administrative oversight for the SARS Academic/Early Alert system; train professional advisors and oversee their work with the system; assess the impact of the academic/early alert interventions; review patterns of early alert and recommend related institutional policy and process enhancements to support student success. Work collaboratively with Academic Support and other campus support departments to resolve issues related to academic alerts. Work with Academic Divisions/Departments in the training of faculty in use of the system.

Provide leadership in the development, implementation and assessment of Getting Started orientation sessions for new students as well as group sessions for transfer and returning students; develop schedule, update presentation, gather assessment data, collaborate with other departments, etc.

Work collaboratively with advising staff on the development of new program/event initiatives ensuring detailed program/event learning outcomes and assessment plans are developed and implemented.

Take a leadership role in the development and dissemination of web-based and printed resources for students, faculty and staff to insure that information is accurate, timely and effective.

Under the direction of the Associate Dean of Academic, Career, and Transfer Counseling assist the development and delivery of effective professional development and training for academic advisor and faculty to insure outstanding academic advising services to students.

Assist with the implementation and maintenance of technology mediated advising tools, such as DegreeWorks and the SARS Alert System, necessary to support effective academic advising.

Assist with the hiring, supervision and evaluation of relevant full and part time staff.

Collaborate with academic deans, program coordinators, faculty, student affairs and enrollment management staff in the design, development and assessment of effective discipline based advising processes, resources, and training programs with a focus on career readiness and planning.

Assist in the development and implementation of an annual departmental assessment plan; collecting and analyzing the required assessment data, reporting the departmental outcomes and developing and disseminating an annual improvement plan based on the outcomes.

Other related duties as assigned by the Associate Dean of Academic, Career and Transfer Advising.

OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Promotes and maintains responsive community relations.

Performs other related duties as required.

Requirements:

Masters Degree, or equivalent administrative experience in higher education

A minimum of three years of progressively responsible advising, administrative or counseling experience in an educational setting or workforce development setting

Demonstrated understanding of academic advising, transfer counseling and/or career services theory and practice

Demonstrated understanding of, and commitment to, the community college mission and student population

Experience in, and/or knowledge of, working with students, staff and faculty of diverse socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds, including those with different levels of academic preparation and varying physical and learning abilities

Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with college deans, faculty and staff to design and implement effective academic advising, transfer counseling and/or career services operations

Demonstrated ability to identify, implement and maintain the technology systems necessary to support college-wide advising, transfer and career services activities

Knowledge of academic administrative computer systems, database management, and electronic communications tools such as e-mail, e-chats, instant messaging to support departmental initiatives

Outstanding written and oral communications skills

Outstanding interpersonal and presentation skills

Bilingual or bicultural a plus

Additional Information:

SALARY: Grade 5 ($43,300 - $62,700). Starting salary within this range is dependent upon experience in a closely related position, but cannot exceed $57,930. as provided for in the grant funding this position.
